Mary Ward Howard, 92, passed away Sunday, October 9, 2016 in San Antonio TX. She was born in Whitesboro, TX on September 10, 1924 to Gilbert and Mary Ward. The infant Mary moved to a farm in the Slaton, TX area with her family in 1925. Because of the depression and drought in West Texas, the family was forced to move to the city of Lubbock in 1936.

Mary Ward Howard, 92, passed away Sunday, October 9, 2016 in San Antonio TX. She was born in Whitesboro, TX on September 10, 1924 to Gilbert and Mary Ward. The infant Mary moved to a farm in the Slaton, TX area with her family in 1925. Because of the depression and drought in West Texas, the family was forced to move to the city of Lubbock in 1936.

Mary graduated from Lubbock High School in 1943, and then attended Draughns School of Business. She married Billy Joe Howard in Lubbock on August 31, 1946. She worked as a secretary at O.L. Slaton Junior High School. Mary and her young family moved to Fort Sill, OK during the Korean War, when her husband was recalled into service. They later moved back to Lubbock.

Mary worked as secretary at Central Baptist Church and later at the VA Hospital in Houston, where the family moved in 1965. The couple retired back to Lubbock in 1979, but lived their final years in San Antonio.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Glynda McClure and husband Tom Carlyon, of San Antonio TX; son, Denney Howard and wife JaNette, of Burleson TX; daughter-in-law, Darla Howard of San Antonio TX; 5 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and 3 siblings. Mary was preceded in death by her husband Billy Joe Howard, her son Billy Earl Howard, her parents, and 8 siblings.
